Short Manaslu Circuit Trek: Tips for First-Time Trekkers

Short Manaslu Circuit Trek: Tips for First-Time TrekkersThe Short Manaslu Circuit Trek takes you around the world's eighth-highest mountain, Manaslu (8,163 m), in just 11 days. You follow the Budhi Gandaki River through Gurung and Tibetan-influenced villages, spend a rest day at Samagaon, and cross the Larkya La Pass at 5,106 m. The trails are far quieter than Everest or Annapurna, and that remoteness is exactly what makes this trek special.

Table of Contents

It is also a real high-altitude trek, so a little preparation goes a long way. These tips come from the local guides at Mountain Eco Treks, who lead this route every season. Below the tips, you will also find the best season, permits, difficulty, and the full itinerary.

Is the Short Manaslu Circuit Right for a First-Time Trekker?

It can be, if you are fit and realistic. The trek is rated moderate to challenging: you walk 5 to 8 hours most days, sleep above 4,000 m, and cross a high pass on a long day. No climbing skills are needed and you stay in teahouses, but we recommend some previous hiking or high-altitude experience. If this is your first big trek, give yourself time to train and follow the acclimatization schedule closely. See the full Short Manaslu Circuit Trek page for details.

12 Short Manaslu Circuit Trek Tips for First-Time Trekkers

1. Train for Back-to-Back Long Days

Build endurance 8 to 12 weeks ahead with hiking, stair climbing, running, or cycling. Once a week, do a long hike with a loaded backpack, ideally on hills. Several days of 6 to 8 hours of walking in a row is the real test.

2. Choose the Right Season

Autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) offer the most stable weather. October has the clearest skies. See the season guide below.

3. Respect the Acclimatization Day

Your rest day at Samagaon (3,530 m) is built in for a reason. Use it for the short hike to Birendra Lake instead of resting completely, but do not push hard. Climb high, sleep low, and keep your pace slow throughout. Your guide checks your oxygen saturation and pulse with an oximeter.

4. Know the Warning Signs of Altitude Sickness

Headache, nausea, poor sleep, and unusual fatigue are early signs. Tell your guide right away instead of hoping they pass. If you plan to carry altitude medication, talk to your doctor before you travel.

5. Treat Larkya La Day Seriously

Crossing Larkya La (5,106 m) is the hardest day, about 16 km and 8 to 9 hours. Start early, often before dawn, layer up for cold wind, and carry water, snacks, and your warmest gloves. Stay close to your guide, and be ready to turn around if weather or health demands it.

6. Book a Licensed Guide, Because It Is Mandatory

The Manaslu region is a restricted area, so a government-licensed guide is required by law, and permits are arranged only through a registered agency. Our guides handle this for you.

7. Pack Layers, Not Bulk

Bring thermal base layers, a fleece, a down jacket, a waterproof shell, warm gloves, a hat, and waterproof boots with ankle support. A sleeping bag rated to about -10°C is recommended. Down jackets and sleeping bags are available on request with our package, so ask before you buy.

8. Carry Cash in Nepali Rupees

There are no ATMs on the trail. Bring enough rupees from Kathmandu for drinks, snacks, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and tips. USD cash is also accepted in some places.

9. Expect Simple Teahouses

Rooms are twin-sharing and basic, and meals include dal bhat, noodle soup, pasta, and pancakes. Bring a power bank, because charging is limited and may cost extra. Wi-Fi is available in some lower villages only, and mobile signal is weak above Samagaon.

10. Prepare for the Long Drives

The trek starts with about an 8-hour drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola on rough roads, and it ends with a long drive back. Bring motion-sickness remedies if needed, and keep a snack and water handy.

11. Get the Right Insurance

Choose travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking above 5,000 m and emergency helicopter evacuation. This is not included in the package, so check the policy wording before you buy.

12. Choose the Package That Fits You

Our Standard plan includes private transport, two nights in a Kathmandu hotel, and a shared porter. The Budget plan uses public transport and offers a porter and private transport at extra cost. Both include permits, a licensed guide, meals, and teahouse stays on the trek.
